Slate Tile Maintenance Tips
Slate floors are tough, but they still need the right care to stay looking sharp. Because slate is a natural stone with a textured, layered surface, it’s more vulnerable to staining and uneven wear without proper maintenance. Here’s how to keep your restored slate floors protected and beautiful for years to come:
-
🧴 Use pH-Neutral Stone Cleaners
Avoid acidic or bleach-based cleaning products—they can damage the surface and strip the sealant. Stick with pH-neutral cleaners designed for natural stone, diluted in warm water. These lift dirt gently without leaving residues or streaks.
-
🚫 Don’t Over-Saturate the Surface
Slate is porous beneath its seal, so over-wetting the floor can cause issues over time. Always use a well-wrung mop and dry the surface after mopping to maintain a clean, dry finish that won’t degrade the seal.
-
⚠️ Avoid Steam Cleaning
Steam can force moisture into the stone and weaken grout lines, especially on older or uneven installations. Stick to standard mopping and brushing methods for safe, effective upkeep.
-
🔁 Reseal Every 18–24 Months
Slate sealants wear down gradually with foot traffic and regular cleaning. To keep the surface protected and enhance colour depth, we recommend resealing every year and a half to two years, depending on usage.
-
🧹 Use Soft Brushes & Floor Mats
Textured slate can trap grit and dust. Use soft-bristled brushes or dry microfibre mops for regular cleaning, and place mats at entrances to reduce tracked-in debris that can dull or scratch the stone.
